(4/09/13) The State of Hawaii has announced the opportunity for investment grade energy audits for Hawaii agricultural producers and rural small businesses interested in energy efficient practices. Through a $100,000 federal grant via the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Rural Energy for America Program, the energy audit initiative will provide approved farms, agricultural producers and other rural small businesses with an investment grade audit that will examine current energy usage, recommend actions and investments to reduce energy usage, and show associated energy savings and financial returns.

(3/14/13) The city’s new renewable energy program will include more rooftop solar panels on city buildings and wind farms on rural lands owned by the city. State officials are encouraged by the city’s commitment. “The city and county are looking very hard at what they can do and I think they’re moving in the right direction,” said Mark Glick, State Energy Administrator.

(3/14/13) Hawaii is the seventh-best state in the nation for solar energy, according to the 2012 annual report released on Thursday by the solar industry trade group Solar Energy Industries Association. Hawaii, which is ahead of states such as Texas, Colorado and Maryland, installed 108.7 megawatts of solar in 2012, enough to power up 37,000 homes. Hawaii moved up four spots from 2011’s ranking.

(1/23/13) Governor Abercrombie proposes a clean energy loan program that could make solar systems more affordable. The program would allow customers to borrow for photovoltaic systems and then pay back the loan as part of their monthly bill. “We think it works well and in time it can play a bigger and bigger role,” says Mark Glick, administrator of the state energy office.

(1/18/13) The updated “Hawaii’s Clean Energy Leaders” list is now available. This list contains 40 renewable energy projects that are demonstrating progress toward becoming commercial enterprises that in turn will assist the State of Hawaii achieve its clean energy goals. The Hawaii’s Clean Energy Leaders list is part of a new interactive web application – Hawaii Renewable Energy Projects Directory, on the State Energy Office’s website. Users can search for renewable energy projects in Hawaii categorized by Project Type. Users can search for “Planning” projects or “Active/Ongoing” projects, then further refine their search by resource, by island or by project name.
(12/21/12) Renewable EnerGIS is a new online mapping tool that helps landowners, developers, residents and policy makers assess renewable energy potential of sites statewide. The interactive tool, launched by the State Energy Office, is user-friendly and does not require special skills, software or experience.

(11/13/12) With the price of gasoline on the rise, more motorists are looking to buy hybrid or electric cars. And there are locations where motorists can charge their EV for free. Volta Industries installs charging stations that are free to use – free because they are paid for by advertising. For commercial properties, Margaret Larson of the State Energy Office, said a guidebook has been published to assist commercial properties with the installation of charging stations.

(8/16/12) Many island communities like Hawaii face significant energy challenges, with high levels of imported oil, skyrocketing electricity rates and limited land and funds to develop clean technologies.
