HGBP 10-ELP Housing checklist

To qualify for HGBP recognition, check at least 10 items on the checklist. If any items in the primary 10-Entry Level Checklist are not applicable to your business, see the Additional Checklist. (Subject to documentation verification and acceptance by the HGBP). *Upon confirmation from HGBP, participants may be eligible to participate in the awards ceremony and receive a HGBP recognition certificate and granted usage of logo. For resources, see the Resources section at the bottom of the home page.

Maximize Energy and Water Efficiency Measures

1. Lighting: Utilize daylighting and install lamps that are energy efficient LEDs

For products that will provide the greatest energy savings, look for products that have earned the ENERGY STAR^® logo. (See Dept of Energy’s Renters DIY Tips and Tricks)

2. Ventilation: Maximize natural ventilation and install ENERGY STAR® ceiling fans and energy efficient ENERGY STAR® air conditioning, when needed

Use ceiling fans to improve air flow and minimize usage of AC. (See Energy Efficient Products | ENERGY STAR^®)

3. Appliances

Provide ENERGY STAR^® appliances (e.g. refrigerators, washers, dryers, dishwashers, and monitors). See Rebates – Hawaii Energy, Appliance Programs | Kauai Island Utility Cooperative (kiuc.coop) and the Dept of Energy’s Incentives for Homeowners for specific items that promote efficiency and qualify for rebates.

4. Water Heating: Install energy efficient water heaters

5. Water efficient fixtures and equipment

Install kitchen and bathroom fixtures that are high efficiency and WATERSENSE^® labeled (e.g. washers, dishwashers, faucets, shower heads, and toilets). See Commercial Rebates – Board of Water Supply, Rebates – Hawaii Energy, DWS Maui, DW Kauai, DWS Hawaii Island for specific items that promote efficiency and qualify for rebates.

6. Landscaping and weather-based irrigation

Install water efficient landscaping and irrigation systems such as weather-based irrigation controller, residential rain barrel, smart water monitor, etc. See Commercial Rebates – Board of Water Supply, BWS Introduction to Xeriscaping (Environmental design that minimizes water use), Rebates – Hawaii Energy, Maui County Dept of Water, and the Dept of Energy’s Incentives for Homeowners for specific items that promote efficiency. Utilize indoor and outdoor plants that minimize irrigation and potable water usage. See Xeriscape – Board of Water Supply for more information.

8. Increase resilience

Use/install building materials that increase resilience to fires, termites, mold and/or hurricanes (e.g. items such as tie down hardware and shutters to protect windows and doors). See FORTIFIED: Build Resilience to Your Budget for more details and other resilience options.

Provide bike parking. Locate site near public transit and active transportation: bus, biking, and car share options, such as: The Bus, Biki, and Hui. Or provide information/map on where these facilities are located nearest to the property.
